Great post Tom....they really do compliment eachother dont they? Having a few tools from another process are great for getting around stuckness in releasing....Bartlett uses alot of NLP language and travelling back to a time when (whatever you are dealing with) wasn't there. He is a classic example of someone that uses many techniques to support what he is doing, now, he is a man that really is open to all possibility :)

Well Frank, there are many ways to combine NLP and The Sedona Method. First though, let me clear some things up.

People unfortunately are labeling things as good or bad when they compare two different modalities such as NLP and The Sedona Method. They think it's "either this or that", and usually in the favor of their favorite modality. Let me expand your thinking and say that it's an "AND-AND" situation that works out better because that gives you a healthy way of life.
Excluding anything based on labels is a deep misperception.

Now that we are clear on that, let me explain how I combine NLP with The Sedona Method. The "Spinning Your Feelings" technique that Bandler uses frequently throughout the book (I have read it completely and it's a great book) is one of the wonderful techniques that works great with releasing, too. Bring up something that bothers you with The Sedona Method (or a goal statement, or something else you're working on that stirs you up), and then notice where the feeling starts in your body. Then notice where it moves to. And then notice how it's spinning: left to right, right to left, up-down, down-up, or pushing in (like a pressing feeling on your stomach going down)-pushing out (like a pressure on your skin). Once you know how the feeling spins through your body, give it a color. Any color that comes to mind is fine, and it's usually the first one that pops into your mind. Now take that feeling out of your body and see it spinning in front of you with the color you just chose and see it spinning in the right direction - like a spinning circle of energy that moves around its own axis. Make sure it's at handreach length in front of you, so you can grab it later on, ok? :)

Now, think of a time when you felt really good. Let that spin through your body and spin it faster. Now, which color would you give that good feeling? Again, any color is fine. Ok, now turn your feeling around, literally: see it spinning in the opposite direction. So if it was spinning forward, now see it spinning backwards - and see it spinning with your feeling good color. Now grab that feeling with your hands (yes, literally grab it "out of the air" with your hands physically) and throw it into your body really fast and spin that feeling around faster and faster and even faster still going deeper now. That's right. Well done.

Ok, now did you notice a huge "release" taking place when you did this? I think so :)

I know you'll enjoy this since you are quite kinestethic. And using Time Lines, as Lisa said, is another wonderful way to use NLP in combination with TSM. Also, use what they call the "fast phobia cure" or the "run your movie backwards in black and white" technique on issues/goals/people that are bothering you still after releasing on them for quite some time for both the past and the future.

Most people worry about reaching their goals in the future - therefore that needs to be neutralized. Go into the future to the end of your worries - that means you've gone past them and are feeling good again in the future. Just make it up - that's what all minds do anyway ;-) Then use the technique - which is too long to describe here - to run the movie backwards in black-and-white until you're back in the now moment. And then use it on things that worried you from the past and use it on that.

This, from experience, works really great. And remember that what Bandler is doing is getting you out of AGFLAP and into CAP by giving you positive feeling strategies - and that is perfectly fine because most people motivate themselves with AGFLAP - fear, anger, stress, etc. In other words he is instructing your subconscious mind to keep on feeling better and better despite of what is going on in your life - and that is in my opinion wonderful. Feel good for no reason, just like with the Sedona Method, right? :)

So allow yourself to enjoy NLP and step out of the "or-or" world and enjoy the world of the "and-and" where anything's possible - hmm doesn't that sound like Richard Bartlett's world too? :) Have fun playing!

Helloooo Frank! I find using Time Line really mixes the two dynamics for me because it is a way of eliminating core and limiting beliefs at their causal point ie treating the root cause and not just the symtoms in effect and it also triggers instant releasing of all other related occurances up to present time. So that in itself is a direct way of letting go I find. Also TLT works with goal setting and working towards attainment of them, another similarity to releasing.

In this way I have mixed TLT with SM goal work. Setting goal charts in the SM way, releasing on the goal, then following through with TLT by dropping them into my time line.

I am not sure about mainstream NLP - but am sure the experts here will know...:)

Okay, I now have Bandler's book, "Get The Life You Want". Question for you SMaRT releasers on this group, what is your approach with mixing these two? I notice Richard like to work with feelings a lot. He uses feeling to get into better mood, or as a motivator, or to empower you. Releasing... well, releases feelings. So, what works best for you in combining these two methods? Tnx.

Demystifying Neuro Linguistic Programming

Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) is well established as a powerful method to develop your potential and enhance performance. It can help you create order from chaos and encourages resourceful ways of thinking while expanding awareness of choices.

We're all born with the same basic neurology. Our ability to do anything in life, whether it's learning a new skill, cooking a meal or doing business, depends on how we control our nervous system. So, much of NLP is devoted to learning how to think more effectively and communicate more effectively with yourself and others.

Neuro is about your neurological system. NLP is based on the idea that we experience the world through our senses and translate sensory information into thought processes, both conscious and unconscious. Thought processes activate the neurological system, which affects physiology, emotions and behaviour.

Linguistic refers to the way human beings use language to make sense of the world, capture and conceptualise experience, and communicate that experience to others. In NLP, linguistics is the study of how the words you speak influence your experience.

Programming draws heavily from learning theory and addresses how we code or mentally represent experience. Your personal programming consists of your internal processes and strategies (thinking patterns) that you use to make decisions, solve problems, learn, evaluate and get results. NLP shows people how to recode their experiences and organise their internal programming so they can get the outcomes they want.

NLP explains how we define and experience reality based on our neurological filters. These filters are programmed in our mind as a result of our cultural and educational upbringing as well as our significant life experiences. Our personal filters (like beliefs and values) determine our how our mind perceives all our experiences. These perceptions influence our mental and emotional state - leading to related behaviours. So it’s our perceptions that determine the quality of each moment of our life.

NLP enables us to be in control of our minds by means of changing our perceptions. When we change our internal maps of reality, we change our external experience of reality too.

A few definitions

NLP can be described in various ways. The formal definition is that it is 'the study of the structure of our subjective experience.' Here are a few more ways of answering the question: 'What is NLP?'

• The art and science of communication
• The key to learning
• It's about what makes you and other people tick
• It's the route to get the results you want in all areas of your life
• Influencing others with integrity
• A manual for your brain
• The secret of successful people
• The way to creating your own future
• NLP helps people make sense of their reality
• The toolkit for personal and organisational change

NLP began in the early 1970’s when Richard Bandler, PhD and Dr John Grinder, PhD, studied people, they considered to be excellent communicators and agents of change. From those days, the field of NLP has exploded to encompass many disciplines in many countries around the world. Some have made NLP more practical and humanistic - helping transform and enrich the lives of many people. The literature on NLP is prolific. Today you'll find NLP applications amongst coaches and therapists, doctors and nurses, taxi drivers, sales people, accountants, managers, teachers and animal trainers, workers, parents and teenagers alike.

NLP informs us that the difference between successful people and unsuccessful people is not in how many resources they have, but in the way they think, in the way they talk and in the way they act. The way you think is what you create in your inner world. The way you talk and act is what you express in your outer world. If you want to be fully successful, you must align your thoughts, speech and actions and apply the following 5 basic principles:

1. KNOW YOUR OUTCOME
What is your desired end result? Focus on what you want.

2. TAKE ACTION
What is the next smallest achievable step that leads in the direction of your outcome?

3. HAVE SENSORY AWARENESS
Use all your senses to notice the signs which confirm that you’re on the right path, or warn you that you’ve detoured.

4. HAVE BEHAVIOURAL FLEXIBILITY
Keep trying new approaches until you get your desired result.

5. OPERATE FROM A PHYSIOLOGY AND PSYCHOLOGY OF EXCELLENCE
Be the person you wish to become through achieving your outcome.

Some of the areas where NLP is used are:

Business:
Coaching, Training, Negotiation, Sales, and Leadership Development. NLP provides the "how to do it" for all the "what to dos" of the other leadership models.

Education:
Classroom management; incorporating the concept of different learning styles: Visual, Auditory and Kinaesthetic, including values and other deep structural "filters" that influence each individual's interest and capacity to learn; accelerated learning technologies; photo reading; spelling and other strategies to enhance learning.

Therapy:
Highly effective Brief Therapy models to treat: phobia, trauma, post-traumatic stress, habit & addiction cessation, allergic response, relationship problems, grief, depression, healing of negative emotions, ADD, ADHD and more.

Sports Performance:
NLP is renowned for its capacity to enhance performance in Golf, Tennis and Diving. NLP is also used extensively in enhancing sports performance for athletes from the amateur to the world class level. Both individuals and teams can benefit greatly by including NLP principles in their training.
On the personal side, NLP will enable you to:

Enjoy far greater control and freedom over your own state of mind, responses, and interactions with others. You'll find it much easier to clarify your dreams for the future and identify barriers that may be holding you back. Change the unwanted habits and behaviours that are standing in your way. Understand you partner's and children's needs and communication styles more fully. Enhance rapport and communication with others. Recognize how others are using language to influence you. You'll find it easier to achieve your personal and professional goals, because you'll gain greater access to your internal resources.

Now that is a very good question....and I remember where I picked that up from, but maybe it is the way he talks in metaphor quite alot, he also throws in alot of re-framing for others to see things in a different way so to speak. He has an incredible depth of knowledge I agree. I love his work and listening to his pod casts and audios. I think he is quite amazing. I will have to have a look if he has any youtube cllips up...would be good to see him in action.
